Share Your Story: Living in France

By Ellie

Why did you move to France?

when i was little my parents asked me if i wanted to come to france for a year so i said yes.(i thought at the time it would be good). After the 1st year we just ended up staying.

How did you do it?

If you have kids and you want them to learn the french faster then i advise you to put them in to a good french school with not too many other English kids. (i lost a year of learning by having a bad teacher and being with other english).

The first year is always hard but once you get the click it just gets easier every day.

For adults to learn french it is a lot harder because they try to translate in their head the word or sentence while the kids just understand it without thinking too hard about it.

work is hard to find when you can't speak the language!!

Tips and Tricks

  • tip one:if you have kids dont move to france before they turn 10 years old.(it will be much easier for them to pick up the french.
  • tip 2:it is a good idea to rent in france for a bit first to see how you like it.

Has living in France lived up to your expectations?

It's hard at first but you get used to it.

there is a lot more freedom and time with the family.

What has surprised/disappointed you the most?

the food is not as good as they say. i still haven't got round to eating frogs legs!

Are most of your friends French or other expats?

i have french friends now but before they were all english.

Do you have anything else to add?

Make sure you are positive about moving you might miss your family and friends in England!!!
