She's been making the headlines in all the newspapers, she comes top in lots of opinion polls. France has never seen a candidate better placed to become the first female President for the country and the result is a media frenzy around Sélogène Royal that goes beyond national borders. |

Je suis par ailleurs président du groupe socialiste et apparenté au Conseil municipal de Lyon, et avec quelques amis, il y a environ quatre mois maintenant, nous avons décidé d'organiser le soutien dans le Rhône et à Lyon particulièrement, à la candidature de Ségolène Royal dans le cadre de la préparation des élections présidentielles. Bon, ça fait quatre mois que Ségolène Royal montre qu'elle est une candidate qui intéresse les Français - pas seulement les Français qui votent à gauche - qu'elle est écoutée, qu'elle est crédible et qu'elle apporte une fraîcheur dans la vie politique. | My name is Jean-Yves Sécheresse, I'm an elected representative in Lyon. I am, as a matter of fact, the president of the Socialist group and I'm co-opted to work with Lyon Municipal Council; and with some friends some four months ago now, we decided to organize support in the Rhone Region and in Lyon in particular for Ségolène Royal's candidacy, in the context of preparations for the Presidential elections. Well, for four months now Ségolène Royal has shown she's a candidate that French people are interested in - not just French people on the left - she's listened to, she's credible and she brings freshness to political life. |

It means the wind of change she represents is causing a certain amount of unrest. I think in the space of a few months she's made French political life look a little outmoded and that goes in particular for some of the leaders of the socialist party. |
| Nous sommes dans un monde en mutation, et, l'idée est assez simple : les gens sont inquiets de l'avenir. Et donc, pour qu'ils reprennent confiance en l'avenir, pour qu'ils revivent un désir d'avenir, eh bien cet avenir il faut le bâtir avec eux. Et donc une des mutations profondes qu'il faudra faire accomplir à notre pays, c'est vraiment donner la parole aux intelligences des territoires et pousser jusqu'au bout le transfert de responsabilité et de pouvoir aux mains des élus locaux ; mais parce que eux-mêmes aussi auront compris que pour agir juste, il faut écouter et associer les populations dans une vraie démarche de démocratie participative que la France n'a pas encore créée et qu'il faudra qu'elle crée. Et je pense que c'est comme ça qu'elle se remettra debout et qu'elle aura envie d'avancer et je crois que c'est comme cela que l'on va changer de méthode, changer de rythme, changer de regard. Bref, je crois que c'est comme ça que nous réussirons à tourner la page pour construire un vrai désir d'avenir. | We're in a world that's changing and the idea is quite simple: people are worried about the future. And so, for them to have confidence in the future again, for them to feel desire for the future again, we need to build that future with them. And so the profound change we need to make in our country is to make a genuine transfer of responsibility to the intelligence that exists out there on the ground, we need to push the transfer of responsibility to its logical conclusion and power into the hands of local government, and because at that level there's the same understanding that to act wisely you need to listen, you need to link the population into a real process of participatory democracy - which France hasn't yet created and needs to create. And I think this is the way in which the country will get back on its feet again and will want to move forward, and I think it's in this way we'll change our methods, change our rhythm, change the way we look at things. In short, I think it's in this way we'll be able to turn the page and create a real desire for the future. |
