Difficult to live here if you can't speak French

Share Your Story: Living in France

From Lydija

Why did you move to France?

My husband is French and I have to move here to be with him

How did you do it?

I married a French man. I met him when he came to work in my country. I married him in my country and not in France. Even so, it is difficult to get all the right paperwork done before I finally got my long stay visa from the embassy. We both spent so much time and money just to get married legally and to get the visa. Even after I'm in France I still have to register my visa with the French immigration and apply the titre de sejour from the city hall. I must have these two done and validated then only I'm valid to stay here for a long time.

Tips and Tricks

  • Learn French is a must
  • Study the culture and custom before coming to france

Has living in France lived up to your expectations?

Living in France does not lived up to my expectation, it's so difficult to live here if you can't speak French at all. Everything here is in French. The only good thing about France is the medical benefit.

What has surprised/disappointed you the most?

The medical benefit is good but I'm dissapointed that most French lack knowledge about other countries and they don't bother to know and learn.

Are most of your friends French or other expats?

Most of my friends are from other countries

Do you have anything else to add?

I have to live in France because my husband work here but if he has a chance to work in my country with good salary we will both move back. My husband really like living in Borneo compare to staying in France.
