un deal

By , About.com Guide

Definition: deal, transaction; drug dealing

On a enfin passé un deal avec eux - We finally struck a deal with them.

Unlike in English, where a "deal" implies "a good deal," in French un deal is usually neutral - it simply refers to a transaction made between two or more parties, without indicating whether one profited more than the other. While it is possible to refer to a good deal as un bon deal, it sounds pretty weird, and une bonne affaire is far more common. Likewise for a bad deal: un mauvais deal > une mauvaise affaire.

Notes: Though you will hear deal in France (and possibly other French-speaking countries), it is not a French word: it's franglais, which automatically makes it informal. Use with caution, if at all.

Official French equivalents: un accord, une affaire, un marché une négociation, une transaction
