Robe des champs

French expressions analyzed and explained

By Laura K. Lawless, About.com

Expression: Robe des champs

Pronunciation: [ruhb day sha(n)]

Meaning: unpeeled (potatoes)

Literal translation: field dress, dress from the fields

Register: normal

Notes: The French expression en robe des champs is such a poetic way to describe unpeeled potatoes - I can't think of anything that even comes close in American English. "Jacket potatoes" in British English is cute, but not as lovely as en robe des champs. A more prosaic synonym is dans leur peau (in their skin).

Example:
Nous mangeons des pommes de terre cuites au four en robe des champs.
We're eating baked potatoes / jacket potatoes.
