Le nouveau est arrivé

French expressions analyzed and explained

Beaujolais Nouveau
Expression: Le nouveau est arrivé !

Pronunciation: [leu noo vo ay ta ree vay]

Meaning: This year's Beaujolais Nouveau has arrived!

Literal translation: The new has arrived!

Register: normal

Notes: Le nouveau est arrivé ! is the slogan for Beaujolais Nouveau Day, the third Thursday in November when wine lovers in France and around the world race to take part in the traditional tasting of the year's Beaujolais Nouveau.

Coined in 2008, it's an hommage to the original slogan from the 1950's, le beaujolais nouveau est arrivé, which was used for five decades before being replaced by - oh là là ! - the English-language slogan "It's Beaujolais Nouveau time" for three years.
