Useful and fun French expressions

By , About.com Guide

One of the joys of learning French (or any other language) is getting to know the idiomatic expressions that help make it so colorful. My husband and I love to share new expressions with one another; in fact, that's where I got the original inspiration for my Expression of the week.

It would be impossible for me to pick a single favorite expression, so I didn't even try. I love il y a quelque chose qui cloche, the filler ah bon, the oh-so-French faire le pont, the faux amical c'est pas terrible, the onomatopoeic et patati et patata, and the dismissive n'importe quoi.

As for usefulness, you can't beat fais voir, j'arrive, tant mieux, and ça marche.

There's a special place in my heart for bien dans sa peau, because it reminds me of the wonderful French class in Toulouse where I learned it.

And I have to admit that I still get a little thrill every time I hear on peut se tutoyer ?

What about you - what are your favorite French expressions?
