Notes: The French proverb En avril, ne te découvre pas d'un fil is used pretty much the same way as "April showers bring May flowers," though in French it's a reference to how unreliable warm weather is in April, whereas the English expression is about the odds of getting wet. Before writing this, I was unfamiliar with British English's closer equivalent: "Ne'er cast a clout til May be out."
A second line is commonly added to the French expression: En mai, fais ce qu'il te plaît - literally, "In May, do what pleases you." And sometimes there's a third line, which might be any of these:
- En juin, tu te vêtiras d'un rien - In June, you'll be dressed in nothing
