If you want to make your French sound more, well, French, one place to start is with your vocabulary. In French classes, you tend to learn the most common, basic terms. Épatant was more popular in the 50's and 60's; it's now a bit old-fashioned and is used somewhat like we use "groovy" in English, for effect.

Note that formidable can also mean "tremendous" or "big."
Formidable is a false cognate; the English word "formidable" means redoutable or terrible.
