Carcassonne, located about 60 miles southeast of Toulouse, is a beautiful medieval city with two sites on Unesco's World Heritage list (the Canal du Midi and la Cité Carcassonne). Even in the winter, there can be quite a few tourists around, because this charming town is well worth a visit at any time of year.
