Dix Points - French Classroom Game

Review vocabulary with this French class game

By , About.com Guide

At the end of the school year, students are often preoccupied with summer vacation and lose their motivation to continue learning. It's a good time to learn, practice, and review French in interesting and creative ways, and games are an excellent way to do this.

This game, called Dix Points (Ten Points), is a fun way to review vocabulary.

Requirements
  • A list of vocabulary to be reviewed
  • Tennis ball
  • Box or milk crate
  • Short, sturdy plastic cup (large enough to hold the tennis ball)
  • Strong tape or poster gum
  • Chalk or colored tape

Set up

Place the box or crate against the wall at the front of the room, and attach the cup to the bottom with tape or gum. Mark a free throw line 10-15 feet in front of the box, using chalk or colored tape.

Divide the class into four groups and have each group pick a name. Write the team names across the top of the chalkboard.

How to play

One person from each team stands up to be the first "answerer" and the teacher asks a question, then calls on the first student to raise his/her hand. Allow 5 seconds to respond. The sitting team members may help the answerer, but only the answerer can respond - don't allow answers from any other team members.

If the student does not answer correctly, call on another answerer until the right answer is given. A correct answer gets one point for the team, as well as one attempt to score additional points by standing at the free throw line and throwing the ball at the cup. If the ball goes in the crate, team gets one additional point. If the ball goes in the cup, team gets « dix points ! »

After the extra point attempt, the four current answerers sit down and new team members take their places.

Notes

This game can be used to review any kind of vocabulary, by reading a word/expression/phrase in English or French and asking for the translation.

This game was shared on the Profs de français forum. Merci beaucoup !
