Que livre - Quoi livre - French Mistake

French mistakes analyzed and explained

By , About.com Guide

Mistakes will always be made in French, and now you can learn from them.

Wrong: Que livre, Quoi livre

Right: Quel livre

Explanation: The English word "what" can be difficult to translate into French, because it has several possible equivalents. When translating "what" plus a noun, such as "what book," the French equivalent is never que or quoi* but rather the interrogative adjective quel - "which." So "what book" or "which book" can only be translated as quel livre.

Examples

I don't know which glasses he prefers.
Je ne sais pas quelles lunettes il préfère.

   What time is it?
   Quelle heure est-il ?

*These words can however mean "what" when not modifying a noun, as in
"What do you want?" - Que veux-tu ? and
"What are you talking about?" - De quoi parles-tu ?
See my lesson on "what" in French for all the details.
