Je habite - French Mistake

French mistakes analyzed and explained

By Laura K. Lawless, About.com Guide

Mistakes will always be made in French, and now you can learn from them.

Wrong: Je habite

Right: J'habite

Explanation: In English, contractions are optional, but in French, they are required. Thus, je, te, ne, etc, always have to contract with any vowels or mute h's that follow them, so you must say j'aime (I like) and j'habite (I live), not "je aime" or "je habite."
