Chercher pour quelque chose - French Mistake

French mistakes analyzed and explained

By Laura K. Lawless, About.com

Mistakes will always be made in French, and now you can learn from them.

Wrong: Chercher pour quelque chose

Right: Chercher quelque chose

Explanation: The French verb chercher means "to look for" - the idea of the preposition "for" is included in the verb itself. But beginners often mistakenly add pour at the end of it, in effect saying "to look for for something," which is obviously incorrect.

Je cherche mon sac à dos
I'm looking for my backpack

Chercher is one of several French verbs that are not followed by a preposition whereas their English equivalents are.
