Learn French on your own or with a tutor

About.com Rating five out of Five

By Laura K. Lawless, About.com

If you want to learn French in the comfort of your own home, the À l'écoute de la langue française program might be just what you need. This self-study French class, available on CD-ROM, is divided into beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. The explanation and examples for each lesson are available on audio, and each lesson also includes practice exercises with corrections.

French lessons

There are a total of 108 lessons, 36 for each level, including grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In addition, there are over 400 practice exercises. There is a complete alphabetical index of all lessons for easy reference, as well as instructions for typing accents and information about helpful resources.

The CD-ROM offers gradual immersion in French: the beginning lessons are in French and English, with gradually less and less English in the later lessons. The intermediate and advanced levels are entirely in French.

Audio component

The entire text of each lesson is just a click away. The audio is recorded by several different native French speakers, providing ample and varied listening practice, even if you already know the actual material. There are fourteen hours of sound total.

Personal tutor

If you need additional help, you can sign up for the personal tutor option (for an additional fee), available by email and voice messaging. This native French speaker will answer your questions and provide French reading, writing, listening, and speaking practice.

French lessons at home

À l'écoute de la langue française is a flexible, in-depth course. Though it offers lessons ranging from beginning to advanced, it is ideal for students with some previous French knowledge, as some lessons may be too detailed for absolute beginners.
