Definition: The level of formality of any given word, expression, grammatical structure, or gesture.

Registers:

littéraire/soutenu - literary/elevated
Extremely formal and elegant language, usually seen only in written French.

formel - formal
Polite language, often written; use when you want to show respect for someone.

normal - normal
Everyday French; can be used with anyone.

familier - informal
Don't use with anyone you vouvoie.

populaire - familiar
Use only with close friends.

vulgaire/argotique - vulgar/slang
Offensive language, usually related to sex, drugs, or violence. Use with extreme caution.
