Definition: A compound French verb tense and the literary equivalent of the pluperfect.

Formation: Simple past auxiliary verb + past participle

Examples:

J'eus déjà mangé quand il arriva.
I had already eaten when he arrived.

Il fut venu à Paris avant le début de la guerre.
He had come to Paris before the beginning of the war.

Misspellings: passe anterieur, anteriour, anterier
