Noun - Nom - French Grammar + Pronunciation Glossary

By Laura K. Lawless, About.com

Definition: A noun is a word that represents a person, place, thing, or idea. It can be either concrete (e.g., a chair, a dog) or abstract (an idea, happiness). In French, all nouns have a gender and number. You can find the noun(s) in a sentence by asking the question "who?" or "what?"

Tom is driving to the store.
Who is driving? Tom.
What is he driving to? The store.

You can also tell something is a noun if it fits in at least one of the following blanks:

The _____ is outside (car, cat, man)

_____ isn't far away (France, Chicago, Europe)

My _____ hurts (foot, stomach, head)
