Results of France's 2007 presidential elections

During the second and final round of presidential elections in France held on 6 May, Nicolas Sarkozy was elected the new president of France. His five-year term will begin with his inauguration on 16 May.

Nicolas Sarkozy - 53.06%

Ségolène Royal - 46.94%

Voter turnout for the second round was at record high levels as measured since the inception of direct universal suffrage in France in 1965:

Total: 83.97% (near record high)
At 5pm: 75.11% (record high)
At noon: 34.11% (near record high)

Round 1

22 April 2007 was the first round of presidential elections in France. As expected, no one won a majority vote, so a second round took place between the top two candidates from the first round: Nicolas Sarkozy (Sarko) and Ségolène Royal (Ségo).

First round total turnout: 83.77%

31.18% Nicolas Sarkozy (Union pour un mouvement populaire)

25.87% Ségolène Royal (Parti socialiste)

18.57% François Bayrou (Union pour la démocratie française)

10.44% Jean-Marie Le Pen (Front national)

4.08% Olivier Besancenot (Ligue communiste révolutionnaire)

2.23% Philippe de Villiers (Mouvement pour la France)

1.93% Marie-George Buffet (Parti communiste français)

1.57% Dominique Voynet (Les Verts)

1.33% Arlette Laguiller (Lutte ouvrière)

1.32% José Bové (Altermondialisme)

1.15% Frédéric Nihous (Chasse, pêche, nature, traditions)

0.34% Gérard Schivardi (Parti des travailleurs)
