Verb Conjugation
Conjugation refers to the five possible inflections of a verb. Once you've made a choice from each of these five, you have a conjugation or inflection. Some factors make it difficult to figure out the subject to conjugate for.

Improve your French Verb Conjugations
Conjugating French verbs in a workbook or letter is one thing, but remembering individual verb conjugations when you're speaking is another matter entirely. Here are some tips to help you get better at conjugating French verbs.

Regular -ER Verbs
Lesson on conjugating the most common French verbs: regular -er verbs.

Regular - IR Verbs
Learn to conjugate regular -ir verbs.

Regular -RE Verbs
The third set of conjugations for regular verbs.

Irregular -ER verbs
There are a lot of French verbs that end in -ER and there are a lot of irregular French verbs, but there is only one irregular -ER verb. However, there are three groups of -ER verbs that have some irregularities.

Irregular -IR Verbs
There are some patterns to irregular verbs.

Irregular -RE Verbs
Learn the patterns as well as the exceptions.

-IER Verbs
French verbs that end in -ier are conjugated according to the same rules as regular -er verbs, but there is a letter combination in certain conjugations that makes -ier verbs seem strange.

Spelling-Change Verbs
There are two groups of French -ER verbs that have spelling changes in certain conjugations due to the hard/soft vowel phenomenon. I call these spelling-change verbs, and you can learn about their changes in all tenses with this lesson.

Stem-Changing Verbs
French -ER verbs that take regular endings but have two different radicals are called stem-changing verbs. There are five categories of French stem-changing verbs - learn all about them here.

Auxiliary Verbs
Lesson and quiz on verbs that are conjugated with être.

Compound Tenses
French verb conjugations can be divided into two categories: simple tenses and compound tenses. Simple tenses have only one part (je vais) whereas compound tenses have two (je suis allé). Compound tenses are obviously more complicated, so this lesson will explain what you need to know about them and includes links to detailed lessons on each tense.

Dual-Verb Constructions
Placing pronouns and negatives with dual-verb constructions (e.g., je vais aller) is a little different than with compound verbs.

Être verbs
Lesson and quiz on verbs that are conjugated with être.

    Mnemonic être verbs
You will eventually know instinctively which verbs take être, but in the meantime, you might want to try one of these mnemonic devices.

Impersonal Verbs
Impersonal verbs have only one conjugation: the third person singular indefinite, or il. Some of these verbs also have personal versions with different meanings, so it's important to learn to recognize impersonal verbs.

Pronominal/Reflexive Verbs
Pronominal verbs (including reflexive verbs) must be conjugated with a reflexive pronoun in addition to the subject pronoun or subject. Learn about the conjugation, types, and usage of French pronominal verbs.

Semi-Auxiliary Verbs
In addition to the auxiliary verbs avoir and être, French has a number of semi-auxiliary verbs. Semi-auxiliary verbs are conjugated in order to express various nuances of time, mood, or aspect and are followed by an infinitive.

Verbs with Prepositions
Many French verbs require a certain preposition in order for the meaning of the verb to be complete, and unfortunately the prepositions required for French verbs are often not the same as the ones required by their English counterparts. In addition, some verbs that do require a preposition in English don't take one in French, and vice versa. Learn all about French verbs with prepositions and then take the test.
