French Classroom Games and Activities

Have fun in French class

Assorted games and activities to make French class a bit more interesting and interactive.

Crêpe-Throwing Game
Invented for la Chandeleur, but you could use it for any French-themed celebration.

Dix points
This game, called Dix Points (Ten Points), is a fun way to review vocabulary.

Family Feud
A classic American game show adapted for French class.

Flyswatter ~ Mâcher le Moustique
Mâcher le moustique is a fun and easy game and a great way to review vocabulary or grammar in any language class.

Hangman ~ Le Pendu
Play traditional Hangman or a variation adapted for French grammar and vocabulary review.

Jeopardy
It can be hard for teachers to keep their students interested and motivated. Games can be an excellent way to learn, practice, and review French in interesting and creative ways. Jeopardy, based on the American game show, is an easy game because you don't need a lot of props.

Living Sentences
Practice grammar, vocabulary, and verbs by having students arrange themselves into sentences.

Mots fléchés
Mots fléchés are French crossword puzzles which provide clues within the puzzle itself, rather than in a list on the side. You can print out free mots fléchés to get a bit of challenging - and fun! - French practice every day.

The Name Game
Learn all of the students' names.

Online Games
If you have internet access in the classroom or language lab, take a look at these online games of Concentration, Hangman, and Word Seek.

Password
Some days students just aren't in the mood to learn, which can make French classes frustrating for them as well as for the teacher. Playing games in French is one technique that can help recapture students' interest while helping them learn or review French. This game, called Password, is a fun way to practice descriptions.

Tongue Twisters - Les Virelangues
Tongue twisters, known as virelangues in French, are words or phrases which are repeated as quickly as possible as a test of the speaker's ability to correctly pronounce the succession of similar sounds. For French students, les virelangues provide an interesting insight into the French language as well as a way to practice phrases which are difficult even for native speakers.

Warm-Up Activities and Fillers
Most language teachers find that there is a bit of dead time during class. This may occur at the beginning of class, as the students are arriving; at the end of class, as they are thinking about leaving; and right in the middle of class, when transitioning from one lesson to another. During this dead time, the best option is to spend five or ten minutes on a short, interesting activity.

Word Search - Christmas
Have some Christmas fun with a word search puzzle featuring French Christmas and New Year's words and phrases.
