A man kissing a woman's hand is a gesture of sophistication and refinement. The lips should not actually touch the hand, but simply hover above it.
This gesture is a bit old-fashioned, but French President Jacques Chirac reminded the world of it when he kissed the hand of U.S. First Lady Laura Bush during her visit to France in September 2003.
