To Return - Transitive French Verbs

Rendre, rembourser, rapporter, renvoyer, and retourner are transitive French verbs which mean to return. This lesson explains the difference in meaning and usage for each of them.

Rendre means "to return something."

   Luc va rendre les livres à la bibliothèque.
   Luc is going to return the books to the library.

   Je vais rendre la chemise de Chantal demain.
   I'm going to return Chantal's shirt tomorrow.

   Expressions with rendre

 
Rembourser means "to return money."

   Luc va me rembourser demain.
   Luc is going to pay me back tomorrow.

   Je veux rembourser l'argent que j'ai emprunté.
   I want to return the money that I borrowed.

 
Rapporter means "to something back / to return something to the store."

   Luc va rapporter la chemise (au magasin).
   Luc is going to return the shirt (to the store).

   Cette robe est trop grande - je dois la rapporter.
   This dress is too big - I have to return it.

   Rapporter is also part of another group of confusing verbs: ramener, remmener, rapporter, remporter.

 
Renvoyer and retourner mean "to send something back."

   Renvoyez/Retournez cette lettre en France.
   Send this letter back to France.

   Retour à l'expéditeur.
   Return to sender.

   Note that retourner can also be used intransitively.
