un sabot

[sa bo]

clog, hoof

Je n'aime pas les sabots - I don't like clogs.

Le cheval donne beaucoup de coups de sabot - The horse kicks a lot.

(inf) - wreck, idiot

C'est un sabot - It's an old wreck.

la sape

[sap]

(familiar) - clothes, gear, duds

T'as acheté de nouvelles sapes ? - You bought some new duds?

(normal register) - undermining, sapping

sec

[sek]

(adj) - dry

Il fait très sec - The weather is very dry / It's very dry out.

Elle est partie, l'oeil sec - She left, dry-eyed.

(informal) - broke

Je ne peux pas sortir avec toi, je suis à sec - I can't go out with you, I'm broke.

sidérer

[see day ray]

(informal) to stupefy, shock; (medical) - to go into shock

L'annonce m'a sidéré - The announcement stupefied me.

Ils étaient tous sidérés par les résultats - They were all shocked by the results.

un smicard (informal) - minimum-wage earner

[smee kar]

Comment peuvent les smicards survivre ? - How can minimum-wage earners survive?

Smicard comes from SMIC - Salaire Minimum Interprofessionel de Croissance - minimum wage. This terms replaced the now old-fashioned term SMIG - Salaire Minimum Interprofessionel Garantie. Minimum-wage earners were then called "smigard."

[su per]

(informal adj) - great, fantastic

Cette boîte est super ! - This club is great!

(prefix) - very, ultra

C'est super-chic, cette robe ! - This dress is very (way) chic!

Ce resto est super-cher ! - This restaurant is ultra-expensive.

 

sympa

[sa(n) pa]

(informal adj) - nice, likable, friendly

Ton copain est super-sympa ! - Your boyfriend is really nice!

Sympa is an abbreviation of sympathique
