la fac

[fak]

(informal, short for faculté) - university department, can also refer to the university in general

La fac de Lettres de la Sorbonne est formidable - The Sorbonne's Department of Arts/Humanities is great.

Je vais à la fac cet après-midi - I'm going over to the university this afternoon.

 

farfelu

[far f(eu) lu]

(informal adj) - cranky, scatty, hare-brained, eccentric

Il est bizarre ce mec, toujours avec ses projets farfelus - That guy is strange, always with these hare-brained plans.

Il y a plus de gens farfelus ajourd'hui qu'hier - There are more eccentric people today than yesterday.

un(e) farfelu(e) - eccentric person

 

une ficelle

[fee sel]

string, type of bread similar to a demi-baguette

J'aime bien défaire la ficelle des colis. - I love untying (the string on) packages.

Mon pain préféré, c'est la ficelle - "Ficelle" is my favorite kind of bread.

Expressions: tirer les ficelles - to pull strings; connaître les ficelles du métier - to know the tricks of the trade; la ficelle est un peu grosse - you can see right through it

Related word: ficeler - to tie up, (informal) - to wear (clothes)

 

la flemme

[flehm]

(inf) - laziness

Il a la flemme de faire la lessive - He can't be bothered to do the laundry.

J'ai la flemme ! - I'm too lazy (to do it)!

Expressions: avoir la flemme - to be too lazy to...; tirer/traîner sa flemme - to loaf about

un flic

[fleek]

(inf) - cop, copper, bobby

Les flics ont arrêté mon frère - The cops arrested my brother.

C'est les flics, tirons-nous! - It's the cops; let's get out of here!

 

fofolle

fourrer

[fu ray]

to stuff, fill

J'aime le gâteau fourré aux fraises - I like cake stuffed with strawberries.

(informal) - to put, stick, shove, stuff

J'ai fourré mes mains dans mes poches - I stuck my hands in my pockets.

Luc a fourré les livres dans son sac à dos - Luc shoved the books into his backpack.

le fric

[freek]

(fam) - cash, bread, lolly

Elle fait beaucoup de fric. - She makes a lot of bread. (money)

Je n'ai pas de fric - I don't have any cash.

le frigo

(informal) - fridge (short for réfrigérateur)

Le frigo est en panne - The fridge isn't working.

Mettez le lait dans le frigo - Put the milk in the fridge.

se frotter

[fruh tay]

to rub (one another), to fight 

Mes frères se frottent constamment l'un à l'autre - My brothers are always fighting.

Tu dois te frotter les mains avec du savon - You need to rub some soap on your hands.

(slang) - to have sex

fuguer

[fu gay]

(informal) - to run away, run off

Ma petite soeur a fugué trois fois - My little sister ran away three times.
