An interactive tool to help you decide whether to use the French subjunctive

This interactive tool helps improve your knowledge of which French verbs and expressions take the subjunctive.

Directions

  • Find the French verb or expression in the drop-down list and think of the correct reply.
  • Click on the button.
  • The answer and a sample sentence will appear in the text box below the button.

Notes

  • If you're looking for expressions that begin with c'est, scroll down to il est.
  • "Maybe" means that the verb/expression takes the indicative when it is in the affirmative, but requires the subjunctive when it is used in the negative or as a question.
  • "Maybe 2" means that the verb/expression requires the subjunctive when it is in the affirmative or interrogative, but takes the indicative when it is used in the negative.
  • For detailed info on French subjunctive conjugations and usage, see my lesson on the subjunctive.
