Vacation in Europe:
Dalías and Málaga, Spain

days 26 - 29

Our leisurely days at the beach in Calpe were followed by a visit to the tiny village of Dalías, where my husband had worked and lived for seven months, 19 years ago. He'd worked as a grape-picker in the fields all around the town, but now the fields are covered, literally covered, with plastic sheeting to make greenhouses. I have never ever seen so much plastic in all my life, and I never hope to again. As far as the eye could see, for miles along the road, the land was hidden by white plastic.

We went to the pensión he had stayed in, and within 2 minutes the propriétaire and family recognized him. It was really neat. Then we went into "town" and a couple of the clerks remembered him as well. This is such a small town that even after 19 years, no one could forget about the American who lived there for many months.

The next day we continued on to Málaga, where we hoped to take a ferry to Casablanca. However, my dreams of being on the water were thwarted once again. The ferry doesn't go all the way to Casablanca anymore. We discussed and debated taking buses, trains, other ferries, or some combination therof, but it just would have been such a long ride and so uncomfortable. So we decided to splurge on last time and fly directly to Casablanca, for $190 apiece.

The available flight wasn't until Thursday afternoon, so we spent Wednesday at the beach in Torremolinos, just south of Málaga. It wasn't as nice as the beach at Calpe, and the water was so salty that we felt uncomfortable after swimming. We didn't feel like going back there on Thursday and we couldn't really think of anything else to do in the area, so we dropped off the car at the airport and just waited there for our flight, reading and playing Scrabble.

And then the plane came and we flew to Casablanca.
