Vacation in Europe:
Geneva, Nyon, Vevay - Switzerland
days 6 - 8
We left Clermont-Ferrand at 7am and arrived in Geneva around 1pm. We bought picnic supplies and had lunch in what we thought was a park, but which turned out to be some sort of upper-crust cemetary. The monuments were spread out quite a bit and the names were all very noble sounding: Sir Jacques this and Le Grand that. After the picnic we looked for a hotel, but they were very expensive, so we decided to move on to the next town, thinking that it would be cheaper than staying in Geneva proper.
The next town, Nyon, turned out to be just as touristy as Geneva, so we didn't save any money on the hotel, but it is a cute town so we decided to splurge. We had quite an adventure trying to find some ice for our champagne bucket (the Swiss don't seem to use ice in their drinks and they don't sell it by the bag like we do in the US), but finally a very nice woman in a convenience store gave us a bagful out of her freezer. We drank the champagne down by Lake Geneva (Lac Leman in French) and then had a lovely dinner in town.
The next day we drove on to Vevay, where we spent 2 hours on a paddle boat, eating our picnic lunch and swimming in the (icy cold) lake. We found a very cute pension de famille to stay in and ate dinner at a restaurant by the lake.
The next morning, we drove up into the hills above Vevay and spent several hours hiking. It was very hot and the trail wasn't well-marked, so we felt pretty lost most of the time, but there were some lovely views.
