Top French Tools for Kids

Encouraging your kids to learn French at a young age is, in my opinion, one of the best things that you can do for them. Humans are born with an amazing capacity for language, but as we grow up, we gradually lose the capability to hear and produce sounds in languages we are not exposed to. The earlier a new language is introduced, the better our odds of eventually being fluent and having a good accent. The problem is that kids won't be happy with some dull, text-only grammar book - they need pictures, sounds, and interaction. I've scoured the internet for fun and interesting French resources for kids - here are my favorites.

First Thousand Words in French
A dictionary and sticker book for babies/pre-schoolers. Vocabulary is introduced in themes and includes color drawings and stickers to make the learning interactive.

Berlitz Kid's French Picture Dictionary
This dictionary includes more than 1,000 terms, each illustrated with a cute, color drawing and used in a simple sentence. The terms are arranged alphabetically by English, and the index is alphabetical by French, so it's easy to find the words you need. Characters from the Nicholas series feature throughout.

I Can Sing en français
Kids of all ages will love these funny songs that thematically introduce vocabulary. Includes audiocassette and color songbook with lyrics in French and English, melodies, and pronunciation guide.

French Language Pack
This Berlitz Kids language pack includes a storybook, 200-word picture dictionary, audiocassette, and flashcards to make French fun for kids aged 4-8.
