| Les premiers travaux du château de Versailles furent ordonnés par Louis XIV en 1661, l'année même où le Roi Soleil prit réellement le pouvoir. Selon Saint-Simon,* le monarque voulait en faire un « plaisir superbe de la nature ». Par son architecture, son décor intérieur, son mobilier et les œuvres d'art qu'il conserve, par ses incomparables jardins et ses annexes des Trianon, le château de Versailles est le prototype de l'art classique français, connu dans le monde entier. | The first work on the Palace of Versailles was ordered by Louis XIV in 1661, the very year that the Sun King really came to power. According to Saint-Simon, the monarch wanted to make it into a "superb natural delight." In its architecture, its interior decor, its furniture and the works of art that it preserves, in its incomparable gardens and its Trianon annexes, the Palace of Versailles is the prototype of French classical art, known throughout the world. |

Avec autant de visiteurs, Versailles est quasiment saturé les jours fériés et les visites endommagent inexorablement un édifice qui reste un véritable mythe national, malgré la Révolution et la chute de la monarchie. | The Palace of Versailles is the most visited site in Europe. It receives ten million visitors a year; that is, as many visitors as the city of Paris has inhabitants. The visitors alone bring in enough money to finance the operation of the museum palace with an annual budget of thirty-six million dollars. With so many visitors, Versailles is nearly overloaded on legal holidays and the visits relentlessly damage a building that remains a veritable national myth, despite the French Revolution and the fall of the monarchy. |

Sait-on, par exemple, qu'une énorme chaudière assure le chauffage de l'ensemble ? Elle est située sous l'édifice, or elle ne répond absolument plus aux normes de sécurité. The whole of the property covers nine hundred hectares (2,200 acres), three times the area of Central Park. It has been subjected to great damage and significant transformations since Louis XIV. The storm of 1999 was the most recent disaster and the replacement plantings are going to last for several more years. Various jobs will be performed. Did you know, for example, that an enormous boiler heats the whole thing? It is located under the building, yet is definitely no longer in compliance with safety standards. Moreover, it very nearly exploded about fifty years ago without anyone knowing about it. It took a brave fireman to avoid the catastrophe. |
| Autre exemple : l'Opéra Royal, le seul théâtre du dix-huitième siècle encore intact en France. Avec ses décors en bois, il est en permanence menacé par le feu. On y tourne pourtant des films de cinéma et chacun est l'occasion d'un début d'incendie. Les assurances couvrent, mais jusqu'à quand ? L'ensemble des réseaux électrique, téléphonique et sanitaire doivent être refaits. Toutes les toitures vont être remplacées. Les bureaux des conservateurs et l'administration entière vont déménager pour libérer de la place afin de dégager de l'espace pour accueillir les bataillons de visiteurs. La transformation la plus spectaculaire sera l'installation d'une copie de la grille qui fermait la Cour Royale* à hauteur des pavillons Dufour et Gabriel. La grille originelle a été démontée après la Révolution en 1793 pour être fondue afin de récupérer le cuivre. | Another example: the Royal Opera, the only eighteenth-century theater still intact in France. With its wooden sets, it is a constant fire hazard. Yet movies are still filmed there and each one is an opportunity for a fire to start. Insurance covers it, but until when? The whole of the electrical, telephonic, and sanitary networks need to be redone. All the roofing is going to be replaced. The offices of the curators and of the entire administration are going to be moved in order to free up space to make room to welcome the crowds of visitors. The most spectacular transformation will be the installation of a copy of the gate that closed the Royal Court at the level of the Dufour and Gabriel pavilions. The original gate was dismantled after the French Revolution in 1793 in order to be melted down for copper. |
| Quatre cent millions de dollars ont été alloués pour mener à bien ce gigantesque projet. Mais c'est non seulement Versailles qui a besoin de cet investissement, c'est tout le patrimoine national. En effet, un rapport officiel affirme qu'un chef-d'œuvre sur cinq court un danger sur le territoire français. Rien que l'année dernière, celui qu'on appelle le Versailles lorrain, le château de Lunéville,* a en partie brûlé et un plancher du château de Chambord s'est effondré. Des monuments aussi prestigieux que le château de Turenne, la cathédrale d'Amiens ou le Grand Palais à Paris sont également menacés. Rien que pour parer au plus urgent, il faudrait deux milliards de dollars. | Four hundred million dollars have been allocated to carry this gigantic project to a successful conclusion. But it's not only Versailles that needs this investment, it's the entire national heritage. Indeed, an official report states that one of every five masterpieces on French territory is in danger. Last year alone, the so-called Versailles of Lorraine, Lunéville castle, partly burned and a floor in the château of Chambord collapsed. Prestigious monuments like the château of Turenne, the Amiens cathedral, and the Grand Palais in Paris are equally threatened. Just to attend to the most urgent would require two billion dollars. |

La République vit de paradoxes que la monarchie ne connaissait pas. | For the Palace of Versailles, the rescue operation has begun. There are still the three hundred statues in the park and the supplying of water to fountains for which nothing has been planned. Nor did anyone think about the dozens of tour buses and the hundreds of merchants who pollute Armes plaza, a magnificent site where the town does nothing, whereas the land belongs to the State. The Republic lives on paradoxes that the monarchy knew nothing about. |
