| Et je vous propose de partir dans le département de l'Aude* à la découverte d'une ville peu connue : Narbonne. Mille ans avant notre ère, Narbonne était déjà une halte sur la route allant de Marseille à l'Espagne, et ce sont les Romains qui lui donnèrent ses premières lettres de noblesse. |
And I suggest that we go to the département of Aude to discover a little-known town: Narbonne. A thousand years before our time, Narbonne was already a stop on the route from Marseille to Spain, and it was the Romans that put it on the map. |

| La ville actuelle de Narbonne a été fondée en 118 avant Jésus-Christ par les Romains, mais cela suppose qu'il y avait avant, dans la région de Narbonne, une implantation, puisqu'on s'aperçoit, grâce aux recherches archéologiques, qu'il y avait un marché. Donc, les Romains se sont installés déjà dans un lieu important et ont fait de Narbonne la capitale de la Narbonnaise, c'est-à-dire la première province romaine au-delà des Alpes. C'est dire l'importance de cette région. | The current town of Narbonne was founded in 118 B.C. by the Romans, but that implies that there already was, in the Narbonne region, a settlement, since we see, thanks to archeological research, that there was a market. So, the Romans had already settled in an important spot and had made Narbonne the capital of the Narbonnaise region; that is, the first Roman province beyond the Alps. That goes to show the importance of this region. |

Aujourd'hui, la cité a la nonchalance d'une sous-préfecture de province dans laquelle on prend plaisir à flâner dans les quartiers populaires et le long du canal de la Robine.* On y découvre un musée lapidaire passionnant dans une église désaffectée du douzième. On peut visiter la basilique Saint-Paul. Tiens ! Là, vous allez découvrir une grenouille, mais pas n'importe laquelle. | From a sad, colorless town with houses of unburned clay and straw, the architectural genius of all-powerful Rome transformed Narbonne into a magnificient port. (With) a first-rate marketplace (and) a flourishing clothing industry, the golden age lasted until the fourteenth century. The port destroyed, Narbonne found itself suddenly isolated, surrounded by mud, stricken by the plague. And it was Louis the 12th who made it into a strong plaza, constructing ramparts and towers with the stones of Roman monuments, but as a result destroying unique evidence of the most prosperous period of the town. Today, the old city has the nonchalance of a provincial subprefecture in which one enjoys strolling in the popular quarters and along the Robine canal. You'll find there a fascinating lapidary museum in a disused church from the 12th century. You can visit Saint-Paul basilica. Look! There, you will discover a frog, but not just any old one. |
