Mais entre le rêve et la réalité, Bernard Poirette, il y a une grande marge. | After their victories in the spring 2004 elections, French Socialists are already dreaming about sending the next president to the Élysée palace in 2007. Et à partir du moment où je ne trouve pas cela dans le traité, en l'état évidemment, je ne peux pas approuver ce traité, et ma … ma pente naturelle, qui sera discutée au sein du Parti Socialiste avec beaucoup d'autres, mais ma pente naturelle est donc de voter contre. |

| En prenant cette position, Fabius s'oppose à la direction socialiste qui, elle, dit oui à cette future constitution. À la fin de l'année, les militants devront trancher : sont-ils d'accord avec Laurent Fabius ou soutiennent-ils la position du premier secrétaire François Hollande ? Le débat n'est pas que de la cuisine politique interne. Si le PS dit non à l'Europe, c'est un signe pour le reste de l'électorat, qui pourrait à son tour dire non au référendum décidé par Jacques Chirac pour l'an prochain. Il y aurait alors crise au sein de l'Union Européenne, en quelque sorte à cause des socialistes français. | By taking this position, Fabius is opposing socialist leaders who say yes to this future constitution. At the end of the year, militants will have to decide: do they agree with Laurent Fabius or do they support the position of the first secretary François Hollande? Let's sum it up. In April 2002, Lionel Jospin was eliminated from the presidential election. The Socialists thus entered a two-year period of what they call "morbid introspection." And then, heavenly surprise: in the regional elections in March, then in the European ones in June this year, (there were) sweeping socialist victories, the right was trounced and also the other opposition parties, especially Greens and the far left, retreated. |

| D'abord parce que, en face, il y a un certain Nicolas Sarkozy,* toujours aussi populaire dans les sondages et à coup sûr candidat à la prochaine présidentielle. C'est un très rude opposant. Ensuite parce que, dans l'état actuel des choses, les prétendants socialistes ne génèrent pas vraiment l'enthousiasme. Laurent Fabius, Jack Lang, François Hollande et Dominique Strauss-Kahn sont certes compétents, mais de là à faire un candidat pour l'Elysée, c'est autre chose. |
First of all because, opposite them, there is a certain Nicolas Sarkozy, still just as popular in the polls and a definite candidate in the next presidential election. He is a very tough opponent. Secondly because, in the current state of things, the socialist candidates do not really generate enthusiasm. | Et surtout, la gauche est guettée par ce qui l'a fait perdre voici deux ans : l'éparpillement des suffrages. Le PS est aujourd'hui incapable de fédérer. Les écologistes, les communistes et les gauchistes feront comme d'habitude cavaliers seuls au premier tour en 2007. Les électeurs de gauche avaient voté en masse pour ces formations à la dernière présidentielle ; c'est eux qui avaient fait perdre ainsi Lionel Jospin. La direction du PS a donc un peu moins de trois ans pour dénicher l'homme providentiel qui empêchera l'Histoire de balbutier. Ça paraît long. En fait, ça pourrait se révéler trop court. |
And above all, the left is threated by what made it lose two years ago: the dissipation of votes. The Socialist Party is today incapable of uniting. The environmentalists, communists, and leftists will go it alone as usual in the first round of the 2007 elections. Left voters voted in mass for these groups in the last presidential election; thus they were the ones who made Lionel Jospin lose. The direction of the Socialist Party has thus a little less than three years to unearth the man they need who will be able to prevent History from stammering. It seems like a long time. In fact, it could prove to be too short. |
