| un arbitre | referee |
| un attentat | attack |
| un blessé | wounded person |
| décerner | to give, award, issue |
| par ailleurs | otherwise, also |
| RPR | Right-center Right political party |

Verb Tenses
Note that many of the things discussed have already taken place, yet the narrator's verb tenses range from past (a vite été plongée) to present (elle est élue) to future (Elle va donc se voir). This is typical of French journalism, to avoid the repetitive nature of a simple listing of actions: Elle a fait, elle a dit, elle a eu, etc.
Civil Status
Americans might find the details about the interviewee's marital status rather strange. In France, one's civil status is everyone's business - it even needs to be reported when applying for jobs!
