| Thonet |
Michael Thonet was one of the great furniture manufacturers of the 19th century, pioneering mass-production processes for bending wood. His classic and instantly recognizable wooden bistro chair known as #14 sold an extraordinary 40 million copies between 1859 and 1939. Thonet was invited to Vienna in 1842 to provide furniture for the Palais Liechtenstein. He stayed on and in 1853 set up with his sons the Gebrüder Thonet company, which still produces the #14 chair. Thonet had a huge influence on subsequent design movements such as Art Nouveau and Bauhaus. |
