Definition The level of formality of a word, expression, grammatical structure, or gesture.
 
Registers  littéraire/
soutenu
literary/
elevated
Extremely formal and elegant language, usually seen only in written French.
  formel formal Polite language, often written; use when you want to show respect for someone.
  normal normal Everyday French; can be used with anyone.
  familier informal Don't use with anyone you vouvoie.  
  populaire familiar Use only with close friends.
  vulgaire/
argotique  
vulgar/
slang
Offensive language, usually related to sex, drugs, or violence. Use with extreme caution.
