C'est le jour de la Noël - French Christmas Carol
Lyrics for "C'est le jour de la Noël," a traditional French Christmas carol

C'est le jour de la Noël is a traditional French Christmas carol from the Auvergne. As far as I know, there is no equivalent English version of this Christmas carol. The translation given here is literal.

C'est le jour de la Noël que Jésus est né (bis)

It's Christmas day that Jesus was born (repeat)

Il est né dedans un coin, dessus la paille
Il est né dedans un coin, dessus le foin.
He was born in a corner, on top of straw
He was born in a corner, on top of hay.
Saint Joseph de son chapeau Lui fit un berceau (bis)   Saint Joseph made Him a cradle from his hat (repeat)
Il coucha l'enfant si doux dedans ses langes
Il coucha l'enfant si doux sur ses genoux.
He lay the infant down so softly in its swaddling clothes
He lay the infant down on his knees.
Le bœuf roux et l'âne gris veillaient le petit (bis)   The red steer and the grey donkey were watching over the little one (repeat)
Ils soufflaient bien doucement sur Son visage
Ils soufflaient bien doucement dessus l'enfant.
They blew very softly on His face
They blew very softly on the child.
Et à l'âge de quinze ans quand il sera grand (bis)   At when he is an adult at the age of 15 (repeat)
Il apprendra le métier de la boutique
Il apprendra le métier de charpentier.
He will learn to be a storekeeper
He will learn to be a carpenter.
Et pour la première fois fera une croix (bis)   And for the first time will make a cross (repeat)
Qui bientôt le conduira jusqu'au supplice
Qui bientôt le conduira jusqu'au trépas.
Which will soon take him to be executed
Which will soon lead him to his death.
