(4) P. Pignon says:

My grandparents came over to the US in the early 1900′s and our tradition on New Year’s Day was to kiss the elders and wish them Happy New Year. But it was done one kiss on the left cheek and we’d say “Bonne Annee” then kiss on the right cheek “bonne Sante”. If someone kissed you that was younger than you, the elder had to give the younger person $1. It worked out great when we were kids, but now as oldfarts, we go broke on NYD. We went to all the elder relatives house’s and did the same greeting to everyone…with a hot pot of chili at each house.

. . . . . . . . . .

Interesting tradition! Were your grandparents French? Which region were they from?

(7) Andrea says:

When my grandmother was still living, if us grandchildren could remember this saying and say it to her on New Year’s Day, she would give us 5 dollars. Her family moved to America from France. It was a hard phrase to remember when we were little. Good thing Grandma was pretty forgiving on the pronunciation. Great memories!

It was so sweet to see this. My Gramma was born in Nancy, France and came to the US when she was 3. She has been gone more than 30yrs now. I still say it to my Mom each New Year and my kids (all 6) say it to her too. I hope one day my Grand kids say it to me. Thank you on many different levels.
