I’ve heard it said that ca m’est ègal has a decidedly negative connotation. Maybe a bit like “whatever” in English, or maybe along the lines of Je m’en fous in French but not as strong?
On the contrary, John, ça m’est égal is very polite. The informal and especially the familiar synonyms I included in my lesson are what you need to watch out for.
What’s the difference between this and “n’importe quoi?”
Jane, n’importe quoi means “whatever,” so in a familiar situation, you could say that to mean that you don’t care. But if you want to be polite, you should say ça m’est égal.
