Some amusement derived from one non-french person at a recent dinner party carefully building the correct future tense to explain that the sauce would arrive in a moment, to be told that it was sufficient (correct?) to merely say “il arrive”.
Houp, j’ai oublié mon portefeuille – j’arrive.
Oops, I forgot my wallet – I’ll be right back.
Dans ce cas la personne qui a oublié son portefeuille dirait plutôt “je reviens tout de suite”… (I’ll be right back)
Édit : Pas d’après mon expérience. J’entends “j’arrive” beaucoup plus souvent.
J’arrive may also have other expressions like. Ces questions en géographie sont difficiles; j’arrive quand-même à en répondre quelques. Ou – Tu m’as bien appris à jouer aux cartes mais je n’arrive toujours pas à comprendre comment utiliser l’atout.
J’ai une question:
Est-ce que c’est toujours obligatoire de mettre les accents sur les MAJUSCULES?
Kulmohan – Yes, the other meanings of “arriver” are covered in the links at the bottom of my lesson.
Regarding accents on capitals, many French people do not use them and even believe that they are incorrect. The Alliance Française says otherwise. Here is what I think: http://french.about.com/library/writing/bl-capitalization3.htm
“quand J’arrive” can sometimes mean “when I get there” in the sense of “when I achieve…something”
