Poll: What is the most romantic language?

By , About.com GuideFebruary 11, 2012

Follow me on:

Do you think French is the most romantic language? If not, does another Romance language make you weak at the knees, or is it some completely different language? Vote in our wildly unscientific poll about the most romantic language, and then share your thoughts about why you find that language so love-ly.

(My apologies to anyone whose most romantic language didn't make it into my list. Can't do every language in the world with only 10 options.)

(1) Trish says:

Salut Laura,

I love French with all my heart. Actually, one of my favorite romantic songs these days is “Quelqu’un m’a dit” with Madame Carla Bruni. But I had to vote for Portuguese, my native language, which has a very warm sonority. In music, it glows with romance, be it in classics such as old Bossa Nova songs or in newer works by Marisa Monte or Skank, for example.

Merci!

Bien que j’aime bien le français, le portugais est la langue d’amour. Avec sa grammaire simple et sa phonologie musicale, ça fait réchauffer le coeur.

Alors, je vous souhaite tous une bonne saint valentin!

thanks,I have lived in france now for six years ,I enjoyed the first lesson and got 80%,mainly because you set it out with a lot of thought. Its not easy as one has to think in reverse to english ,but a start is good and hope to progress at a steady rate
thank you !

(4) Cathy says:

Yes, French is a very beautiful language.I would say it is overwhelmingly the language of love, with Italian coming in second.Sorry Portuguese voters, I just do not find Portuguese to be a very attractive language. And I do not find my own language of English to be very attractive, either.

(5) Jos says:

I said Italian for romance, but I find Arabic by the far the most melodic.

(6) Tamas says:

I would have to say my native tongue, Hungarian. There is just incredible rhythms that come from Hungarian. I’ve been reading a lot of Hungarian poetry lately to remember it, as I am forgetting more and more every day, and it is beautiful to hear, even if you can’t understand what the speaker is saying.

were you born in hungary or or your parents from hungary. I would like to know a little of the history and what hungarian families are like, as well as the common meals.

Our family just found out that we had a great grandmother who was hungarian. So im a little curius about the hungarian history.

Thank you,
Lu

(12) Abhijit says:

As much as I like French, I have to vote for my mother tongue, Bengali. It is a very sonorous and expressive language. Bengali is the sixth most spoken language in the world and is one of the principal languages in India. A very large amount of poetry, songs , and other forms of literature exist in Bengali. It is derived from an Indo-Aryanlanguage (Sanskrit)and may be difficult to learn. Its most famous exponent is Rabindranath Tagore (first Noble laureate from Asia in Literature). A lot of Bengali poetry and other items are translated into French (and other languages)and I would welcome anybody to explore them.

French is the language I can speak best, other than English, but I love the sound of Portuguese much more now that I’ve gotten into it … but French is right after!

(19) ryan says:

French is definitely the most “romantic” of romance languages followed by Italian and Portuguese (both mainland and Brazilian–more Brazilian). Actually I’d say Brazilian is a close 2nd. I also think Welsh and Irish Gaelic are quite lovely to listen to, especially in music. Spanish can be nice in music as well–check out Il Divo for some nice Spanish/Italian and French songs. I took French, Spanish and (mainland) Portuguese in college but am partial to French c’est la langue d’amour!

(23) Laure says:

I would have said Italian or French, but Italian has some goofy sounding words and intonations, and sometimes French is bizarrely gutteral.

I haven’t heard much Portuguese spoken, but listening to it being sung….sounds like a gorgeous blend of several romance languages, with only the prettiest sounds left in.

See what I mean….

L’amour, l’amour, l’amour. French is definitely the most romantic language. The French “r” sound is really not gutteral, when done correctly, it sounds just as smooth as the British “r”. Their language evolved just like their wine, cheese, and cuisine.

I think English and French are nice languages , but the most romantic language is definitely Arabic!

if you had or would have a chance to listen or read an Arabic (Romantic) poem) I’m sure you will all agree with me.\
well that’s right it’s my native language but tha’s not the real cause for me to choose it as the most romantic language.

thank you

It’s a tossup between French and Italian. But of course you can also fight just as well in both languages. But then you can make up in British style English, or try some formal, non-committal Japanese.

(35) Jon says:

I don’t think French is the most romantic language. Just go listen to all the teenagers speaking it and all the sudden it’ll not sound so great. All guttural and slurring everything together with “ben oui quoi”. That’s not my idea of romantic.

February 11, 2011 at 11:30 am
(36) Minimino says:

This is a French website, so French will and has won the poll and dominates the comments. As a contrarian, I’ll propose the language that everybody would reject: German. What? Why?!? Love-talk comes out of French, Spanish, and Italian mouths virtually automatically. Germans are not given to such effusions unless meant with far more, if not total, sincerity and in the private, not the public sphere.

February 11, 2011 at 12:00 pm
(37) Richie says:

I voted French, but I personally think that Italian is in a VERY CLOSE second. It is essentially dead-even, but French, for me anyway, just pushes far enough to get ahead. I think both are beautiful, elegant, and very pleasing to hear nonetheless, though.

February 11, 2011 at 12:00 pm
(38) Abmalik says:

Yeah there’s no doubt french for a non-french person is difficult at the beginning… but come to think of it. Is there any language as smooth as the french. I’m an english speaking person, never did french in primary school but I’m learning after graduating from the university. My late dad learnt and spoke french fluently all his life, because of his interest and dedication, I’ve dedicated my time to learning the language and ensure my kids learn and speak it too. You wanna woo someone… try it the french way, it’s my new love!!!

Thanks laura for your selfless contribution to letting me and others understand the ease with which one can learn the most romantic language.

Ciao!!!

(39) Virginia says:

I too love that Carla Bruni song! But I personally had to vote for Catalan, because that’s what’s closet to my heart — I fell in love with the language, city and culture while I was studying abroad in Barcelona. Plus it’s a nice mix of French, Spanish and Italian, which I would otherwise say are tied for language of love! (Pablo Neruda’s poems will convince anyone that Spanish is romantic; French already has enough said; and Italian — have you BEEN to Italy? Ordering a cup of coffee is like reading a sonnet out loud.)

Definitely Portuguese! A touch of French, a touch of Italian, without the stress of the way too rapid French. But on the other hand, French IS beautiful.

(42) cellotrack says:

Being a speaker of English, Mandarin Chinese, French, Castilian Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, I unequivocally consider French to be the most beautiful, sophisticated, elegant, and romantic language. Portuguese is a smooth language that flows well too, with sounds related to French. The sounds of Italian are very similar to Spanish, which are harsh, elementary, and unrefined.

No one has mentioned this, but Hebrew is an incredibly beautiful and profound language, amazingly structured. It has strength and drama, yet expresses great tenderness. Every language possess its own beauty, though. My personal favorites are French, Italian, Russian and Spanish. I’ve also found German to be incredibly beautiful when sung.

March 2, 2011 at 10:16 am
(47) Michelle says:

French and Italian have the romantic tone and melody when uttered. However, reading Spanish and listening to music in Spanish you’ll see just how romantic Spanish can be. No other language has it. There is something special with the way those who speak Spanish express themselves. Both Spain and Latin America have amazing writers, poets, and singers…just listen to some of them and if not then get yourself a boyfriend who speaks Spanish, you’ll see the difference!

(50) Solomija says:

Pure, literary Ukrainian is underrated, and its sound relatively obscure to the Western ear. Unfortunately, the language has been repressed during and after the fall of Communist regime by neighboring Russia, and the increasingly Russified Eastern half of the nation. By far, I think it is the most mellifluous Slavic language. Very pleasing to the ear indeed.

“A linguistic contest that took place in Paris in 1934 was significant for the Ukrainian language. It was recognized as the second most melodic language in the world after Italian and the third most beautiful in phonetics, vocabulary, phraseology, and sentence structure after French and Persian.”

(52) Ylze says:

– but, Laura, you know me, “ Heureux au jeu, malheureux en amour”.

(63) Noel says:

FRENCH is so soothing, musical and flowing…lika a gentle stream in summer. My native language is English which is certainly wonderful but the sound of French is so enthralling–words are never pronounced fully unlike English. I am fluent in this language having lived and studied French in Bordeaux, France for four years and always loved to hear “AU REVOIR MONSIEUR” after leaving a store or a bakery or any establishment…compare GOODBYE and you see the difference in poetry and rhythm. French in my romantic view is most aesthetically pleasing and it’s no wonder the ad says–SEE PARIS AND DIE!

Just to widen out the choice a bit I will mention that:

(66) Mohammed says:

It’s normal that everybody prefers his/her language; in my view the power of feelings, senses, emotions and love depends on the human himself/herself and their traits not the language itself and those humans reflect what they feel to the language (any language), and of course the people are not equal in this concern.

If anyone has any information about this mystic language contest in Paris in 1934, please share. I’ve heard about it since I was a kid but I cannot find any information about it online except for a bunch of Ukrainian sites saying exactly what is mentioned here, using these exact words and no references.
