Alpes de Haute-Provence
The Alps in Haute Provence are renowned for their ski resorts, but a summer visit to the region is interesting too. (Hey, that rhymes! [in French])
Invited by one of our friends from Hyères, we spent the first night of our trip, 30 June, at his vacation home in Seyne-les-Alpes. The route was magnificent - beautiful mountains, infinite fields of flowers, notably poppies. As for the village of Seyne, it's watched over by Fort Vauban, a 17th-century citadel.
Together, we visited Le Lauzet-Ubaye, a nearby village with an incredibly beautiful lake and Saint Laurent church. The latter was closed the evening of our visit, but the caretaker happened by and kindly opened the door for us.
The next day, we drove around for a couple of hours to admire a bit more of this beautiful area before continuing northeast.

Invités par un de nos amis hyérois, nous avons passé la première nuit de notre voyage, le 30 juin, dans sa maison de vacances à Seyne-les-Alpes. La route était magnifique - de belles montagnes, des champs infinis de fleurs, notamment des coquelicots. Le village de Seyne, lui, est dominé par Fort Vauban, une citadelle du XVIIe siècle. Nous avons visité ensemble Le Lauzet-Ubaye, un village voisin qui est doté d'un petit lac bellissime et de l'église Saint-Laurent. Elle était fermée le soir de notre visite, mais la gardienne est passée par hasard et a gentiment ouvert la porte pour nous. I cannot find the word “bellissime” in French dictionaries.
I am from Sweden and I am studing French. I find your French lessons very useful.

D’apres le site Wiktionary on trouve: Suffix used to form the superlative form of adjectives. Par exemple, La Republique de Venise etait connue sous le nom de La Serenissime.
Meme en anglais il n’est pas rare de voir cette forme d’ajectif. Mais on le prononce a trois syllabes: ISS-EE-MAI. On pourrait dire rarissime si l’on commandait un steak.

Hi Laura, the maps a great idea.
The issme superlative is exceptionally common in Italian – every word just about can be modified that way (bellisimo, grandissimo, sono stankissima !) – are there many French words that can be thus modified?
I enjoy your emails very much. Just a small technical comment: In my browser, sometimes part of the french text is covered by a photo or another link. This week, the paragraph starting with “Le lendemain” was like that.
I also noticed belissime, but I easily understood the intention and kind of liked it.

As regards the musical terms, traditionally musical expression instructions generally use the talian language (with some exceptions in later days, such as Debussy and Satie among French composers) – so maybe that accounts for the ‘-issimos’ in these cases?
