Chemin de fer de La Mure

Inauguré en juillet 1888, le train de La Mure a amené du charbon à Grenoble pendant cent ans. Aujourd'hui, c'est un véhicule touristique, et pour cause ! Cette automotrice tracte ses wagons des années 1930 sur la voie surnommée « la plus belle ligne des Alpes » entre La Mure et St-Georges-de-Commiers - un trajet de trente kilomètres qui traverse des viaducs et des tunnels, et offre de belles vues sur les montagnes et le lac de Monteynard.

En rentrant de Grenoble l'été dernier, mon mari est devenu obsédé par le Chemin de fer de La Mure, que nous voyions depuis l'autoroute. Il voulait absolument le prendre - jusqu'à ce moment, je n'avais pas réalisé qu'il était si féru (mot du jour) de trains. En tout cas, ce n'était pas le bon moment, et il a dû attendre notre voyage cet été. Je viens de lui demander si ça valait la peine d'attendre ; voici sa réponse :

C'était très intéressant, et une manière sympa de voir un peu plus de cette belle région. Côté inconvénients, puisqu'on avait notre voiture de location, on était obligés de faire l'aller-retour en train ; c'était moins passionnant de suivre le même chemin une deuxième fois.

Et voilà - ça vaut le coup, surtout si on peut faire l'aller simple.

Chemin de fer de La Mure

Inaugurated in July 1888, La Mure's train brought coal to Grenoble for a hundred years. Today, it's a tourist vehicle, and with good reason! This electric railcar pulls its cars from the '30s on the nicknamed "most beautiful line of the Alps" between La Mure and St-Georges-de-Commiers - a 30-kilometer (18.6-mile) trip which crosses viaducts and tunnels, and offers beautiful views over the mountains and Lake Monteynard.

On our way back from Grenoble last summer, my husband became obsessed with the Chemin de fer de La Mure, which we could see from the highway. He was dying to take it - until that moment, I hadn't realized that he was such a train fanatic. In any case, it wasn't the right time, and he had to wait for our trip this summer. I just asked him if it was worth the wait; here's his response.

It was very interesting, and a nice way to see a little more of this beautiful area. On the downside, since we had our rental car, we were obliged to do the round-trip in the train; it was less exciting to follow the same route a second time.

There you go - it's worth it, especially if you can go just one way.
