Centennial of naval aeronautics
The year: 1910. The acquisition: Farman biplane. The qualification: pilot. The result: birth of French naval aeronautics, a division of the French Navy.
On Sunday, we attended a big celebration: an air show commemorating the centennial of French naval aeronautics, which took place at the base in Hyères. Planes had been practicing in the preceding weeks, and each time the roaring of the planes began, we stayed glued to our balcony to watch. But the day at the base was completely different.
Someone had said that there would be 40,000 visitors, and I think they were right. The base is enormous, and there were a ton of people. On the ground were dozens of planes, not only French, but also German, American, British, Spanish, and Italian. Pilots stood ready to answer questions, and kids could even climb into some planes.
Even more planes participated in the aerial demonstrations, but the highlight was of course France's Patrol (also called France's Acrobatic Patrol or PAF) with its three-color smoke. Virginie Guyot has been at the head of the Patrol since 2009, and is the first woman to command an acrobatic patrol.

Centenaire de l'Aéronautique navale L'année : 1910. L'acquisition : biplan Farman. |

c’est magnifique!
Je souhaite que j’étais là!
Merci Laura.
I just wanted to say how useful I found this and your other bilingual articles. I’m trying to translate the English version in to French and then comparing my effort to your French version. It’s like comparing cheap cider to champagne! Nevertheless I’m really learning where the gaps in my knowledge lie – just about everywhere!
Thanks very much for this wonderful resource
Lorraine
I am gratefu for this resource.I now apreciate french language better and i also use this website to do my revision.
Thanks
I just want to join Lorraine in her comments cause I do exactly what she does when comparing both columns, and I feel just like she does when I review my translation…! But I’m certainly doing much better than two or three months ago! Thank you sooo much Laura!
Chère Laura,
Merci pour votre site,
Je pense à vous en France
Adieu,
Jacqueline
(like proposition in)
Merci d’avance
merci beaucoup Laura for the lesson, it’s been a wonderful time for me since I found your site…
yay! understood 90%! I love the side by side
