Beaujolais Nouveau 2009
When I tasted Beaujolais Nouveau for the first time last year, I said that I wanted to go to Burgundy this year to really take advantage of this celebration. Even though the wine isn't great, this annual craziness is part of French culture, and so I'd like to be at the heart of it, at least once. Unfortunately, it wasn't this year - we are too busy to travel right now.
Fortunately, we managed to find a nice way to participate in this event here in Hyères: the Beaujolais Nouveau was flowing at our wine seller's, who offered a little tasting of 8 bottles, half of which come from the unmissable Georges Dubœuf. We tried three reds, and bought three bottles of Domaine de la Levratière's Beaujolais-Villages - very light, fruity, and a lovely red-violet. Upon seeing the rosé Beaujolais Nouveau (which is not well known, even though it was introduced in 2006), we tried that too: it was barely drinkable.

I would have translated incontournable as ‘unavoidable.’
‘Unmissable’ is ambiguous between ‘must not be missed’ (good) and ‘can’t be missed’ (merely ubiquitous).
Unavoidable conveys the idea that Duboeuf’s bottles are everywhere, like it or not. They can’t be missed even if we would rather give them a miss.
Thanks for the article. I always buy a couple of bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau and they almost always George DeBoeuf.
I find them to be very enjoyable…but, hey, what do I know, compared with some of the “experts” who comment.
Merci,
Eve
I am new learner of French. I heard about Beaujolais Nouveau. Its a festival of wine. But what is BN? Is it a brand? or Its a kinds of wine which only serve and available 3rd thursday of noveber? Hope someonr give me some light on the topics. Thanks to Laura for present understanding. Merci beaucoup.
Haider
Actually Beaujolais Nouveau is very nice and they sell a fair amount of it in Ireland especially George Deboeuf. It is a nice light Red and goes with almost any Food including Paisson/Fish.
There is a Race or was I dont know if they still do it. But every Year when the New Beaujolais is Produced, a Group of Wine Importers and Restaurateurs Race to bring it to Ireland from France. One Year one Party was bringing in the Beaujolais on a light Plane and involved in the Race when they crashed unfortunately and were killed. It was just a Fun thing for them to do I dont think there was any Prizes,it was a way to Advertise the Wine. I have never Tasted Rosé Beaujolais Nouveau much less ever seen it.
Dublin ireland
Harley, I think you missed Laura’s point. My immediate interpretation was that M Duboeuf’s wines are too good to miss. “Unavoidable” gives a completely different meaning. Perhaps ” half of which come from the not to be missed Georges Duboeuf” would overcome any ambiguity.
bonne chance, Araydan.
Harley and Tom – interesting interpretations, but what I actually meant was something more like, “if you want to taste Beaujolais Nouveau, you have to include Georges Dubœuf.” He is the largest and best known producer of Beaujolais Nouveau, so if you want to know what BN is really like, you should taste at least one of his bottles along with a few others.

Bonjour Laura!
you have inspired me to start learning about wines how lucky you are to be able to speak french fluently i have started learning but cant affort to buy books so i get a bit of information at the library in cape town south africa thankyou so much
Sometimes traditions require the tasting and even purchase of some wines. I have a friend here in Connecticut who owns a winery and I force the smile on one variety as I do the BN. But I encourage everyone to try as many French wines as possible, you’ll find the type and chateau you can’t resist. As for me, simple red table wines from France are awesome!
