Il y a plusieurs moyens d'explorer Toulon. Je recommande vivement que tout visiteur achète le Pass 1 jour téléphérique à l'Office de Tourisme ou à la gare routière. Pour six euros, on a non seulement un billet aller-retour pour la téléphérique du mont Faron (qui coûte normalement 6,30 euros, donc c'est déjà une économie), mais aussi accès illimité aux bus et aux bateaux-bus. Ces derniers traversent la rade pour vous amener à St-Mandrier-sur-mer, à la Seyne-sur-mer ou aux belles plages des Sablettes.

Nous avons pris le petit train deux fois, parce qu'il y a deux circuits, selon la saison et un autre facteur moins clair. En été, le circuit inclut principalement l'arsenal, mais quand nous sommes arrivés le matin, le conducteur nous a dit qu'on ne pouvait pas visiter la base navale avant quatorze heures (et encore, ce n'était pas garanti). L'autre circuit, qui se fait le reste de l'année et quand la base est interdite, montre la vieille ville, la corniche du Mourillon et les plages. La visite commentée est en français parsemé de chansons traditionnelles avec, parfois, des commentaires inattendus en anglais, espagnol ou italien.

Et bien sûr il ne faut pas louper (mot du jour) la visite de la rade, une promenade commentée en bateau.

Visiting Toulon

There are several ways to explore Toulon. I strongly recommend that all visitors buy the Pass 1 jour téléphérique at the Tourist Office or bus station. For six euros, you get not only a round-trip ticket for the Mont Faron telepherique (which normally costs 6.30 euros, so it's already a savings), but also unlimited acces to the bus and ferry bus service. The latter cross the harbor to take you to St-Mandrier-sur-mer, Seyne-sur-mer, or the beautiful beaches at Sablettes.

We've taken the little tourist train train twice because there are two routes, depending on the season and another, less clear factor. In the summer, the route consists mainly of the naval base, but when we arrived in the morning, the driver told us we couldn't visit the base before 2pm (and even then it wasn't guaranteed). The other route, which is used the rest of the year and when the base is forbidden, shows the old part of town, Mourillon coast, and the beaches. The guided visit is in French sprinkled with traditional songs and, sometimes, unexpected comments in English, Spanish, or Italian.

And of course you mustn't miss the harbor visit, a one-hour guided visit by boat.
