Beaujolais Nouveau 2008

Friday November 21, 2008

Beaujolais Nouveau

English translation

Next year, I'm going to have to go to Burgundy in November, because I couldn't find a real Beaujolais Nouveau celebration here in Hyères. We ended up in a little night club with a bottle of wine (25 euros), a buffet (inedible), and a singer (too loud).

The wine, how to describe the wine? It was very light, nothing like other red wines I've tasted. With its banana flavor and slightly sour aftertaste, my first Beaujolais Nouveau didn't thrill me, but I'm willing to give it another shot.

(1) Clare Barclay says:

When we visited Beaujolais in the summer the vignerons were not at all happy about this year’s harvest. Let’s hope they have a better season next year.

(2) Andy says:

Laura, the whole Beaujolais Nouveau business is nothing more than an extremely successful marketing campaign. The wine is just plonk that hasn’t even been aged to remove its sharp edges, wrapped in a mammoth ad campaign. Although it has brought plenty of money into the business, it has also spoiled the reputation of Beaujolais among people who think that nasty stuff they taste each year represents the region.

There you go!Just shows you how much we can
differ in our tastes Roger thought it was great.personally,I think most wines are awful.
But I did find one that I took a liking for
while on holiday in Cyprus,a medium sweet white called Blond Lady. Many years ago, before retiring,I worked for a firm that had quite a few partners and one of them used to send a
junior member of staff down to one of the
English ports where the ferry arrived from
France with the first of the season’s Beaujolais .Just so he could brag to his fellow partners as being the first to taste the new wine!On the subject of differing tastes,in my sea-going days I once met a guy
who thought mixing brasso with a strong orange drink tasted good,so there you go!

I don’t like it either, and it reminded me of a few other French drinks I don’t like – namely red Martini and pastis in general. Too sweet, but hey, it just shows there’s a wine for everyone.

(8) Jos says:

btw Laura – you mention l’année prochaine, does this mean you’re already planning to go through the visa hoops and try and get another year in France? I hope so, for your sake and ours, your avid readers!

(9) Laura K Lawless says:

Salut Jos – Yes, that was always the plan. Renewing is a *lot* easier than the original application.
