Bonjour mes amis. C'est intéressant d'entendre les stéréotypes que des Français ont envers les Américains. Une dame dans notre atelier de céramiques est étonnée que nous mangions le beurre, buvions le vin et connaissions l'idée du travail au noir. Pour les deux premiers, je ne peux pas décider si elle pense que les Américains sont tous des fanatiques de santé ou des gens qui n'aiment pas les bonnes choses. Pour le troisième, apparemment elle croit que les Américains sont si respectueux des lois que nous ne connaissons même pas la notion de travailler au noir. Quels stéréotypes avez-vous découverts en voyageant en France ?

We use butter more than eat butter per se. travailler au noir mean working under the table, which means what the black market, skiming, cheating on your taxes?
My favourite is the stereotype about the English being very phlegmatic and never showing emotions. It’s funny because it’s said with the exact same negative overtones that the Brits have whey talk about the “overexcitable Gallic” nature.
Je suis americaine, et j’habite à Paris depuis une année. . .les stéréotype les plus communs ce sont que tous les americans parlent trop fort, mangent fort (et seulement les hamburgers apparemment), et que nous disons “oh my god” tout le temps!
Moi, je suis espagnole et je pense que en générale, les personnes d’États Unis ont seulement intérêt par son pays et ils mangent beaucoup parce que ils ont des assiettes et verres très grandes ou plus grandes qu’en Europe. Et c’est formidable que partout on puisse acheter des sacs avec des morceaux de fruits
Quel age avait cette dame dans la classe de ceramiques ? Les gens d’un certain age ont parfois une idee preconcue et desuete au sujet des Americains. Laura, vous me sembler coupable de stereotyper une Francaise ! Les commentaires de cette dame ont aussi fort a voir avec son education litteraire, sociale, etc…
Brent – Use/eat… same difference really. She believes that Americans don’t consume butter. Travailler noir / working under the table means accepting a job without a contract and therefore not paying taxes. My husband had joked that that was the only way he would be able to work in France, and she was astonished that he was even familiar with the concept.
Parvati – un stéréotype n’est pas une seule personne. Je parle d’une personne qui croit certaines choses des Américaines – ces idées sont des stéréotypes. Je parle seulement d’elle – ce n’est pas un stéréotype parce que je n’ai pas dit que tous les Français croient ça.

Lorsque nous étions en France l’an dernier, précisement hors de Perpignan, nous avons rencontré plusiers de gens qui nous ont dit: “Quelle surprise de vous voir ici. On ne voit beaucoup d’américains. C’est parce que les américains ne recoivent plus d’une semaine pour les vacances, n’est pas?”
(Et, en fait, c’est vrai.)
Moi, je crois que le stéréotype a parfois une base dans la réalité.
Quand j’étais en France (près de Nantes), j’ai remarqué qu’ils ont “le sandwich américain”. C’est un sandwich avec le steak et les frites dedans. Je leur ai dit que c’est rigolo parce qu’on ne mange pas les frites dans le sandwich chez nous.
Perhaps you would be interested in a transcript of an RFI broadcast [below]from France that expresses astonishment that the Pope was greeted at the airport in Wash. D.C. by Bush who is Protestant. This fact was NEVER mentioned in the Amerian press because it is not important in America. I think the astonishment comes perhaps from the divisions in France and French history and not because they know how Americans think. They have a stereotype of Americans in this respect. patricia – C’est un autre stéréotype que les Americains ont seulement un intérêt dans notre pays. Il y a quelques gens ici qui sont égocentrique, mais on trouvera ça partout dans le monde, pas seulement à l’Amérique. C’est bien important de comprendre les autres pays et leurs citoyens (y compris l’Amérique) avant de les juger.
J’habite depuis plus de 20 ans a Houston au Texas et je peux vous dire que les americains autour de moi ne mangent pas de beurre…. et ils ne boivent pas de vin! Ils mangent de la margarine et ils boivent de la biere…..!
Et ils ne sont pas au regime!

En Californie ou a New-York, c’est probablement different.
C’est un peu comme le beret qui est porte seulement par les basques en France, mais les americains representent toujours les Français avec un beret, un foulard rouge et un pull raye.
Les frites dans les sandwiches, j’ai vu cela sur PBS dans une emission sur les sandwiches, mais je ne sais plus dans quelle ville des USA. Pour moi le sandwich americain, en France, c’est plutot un genre de submarine sandwich avec differents types de viandes, fromages et crudites
Il n’y a pas que les Basques qui portent le beret en France ! Je suis de Lorraine et mon pere, qui est maintenant decede, le portait presque tous les jours – et il n’etait pas le seul. Je dois ajouter qu’il avait fait son service militaire dans les “chasseurs alpins” et que le beret kaki faisait partie de l’uniforme.
Felicitations a Laura pour avoir joint une classe de ceramiques, c’est un premier pas vers son entente franco-americaine.

Vous avez raison. I live in Northern Calif. not far from Napa and Sonoma counties where there are some of the best wines in the world. Some years ago there was a blind wine tasting in Paris between the best French and American wines and the French picked Calif. wines as the best of all! America is a large country with many different regions, as I’m sure you know, and very hard to stereotype!
A fair number of French people that I have met think that Richard Burton, amongst others, was an American! It’s difficult to imagine hat the average French person has never heard that charismatic ‘real’ English voice,[je parle du doublage, bien sur.]
One major stereotype that the French have is that Americans can only speak English, and they are not interested in learning other languages. When an American speaks French to a French person, he/she may have a hard time believing that the person really is American. Alternatively if they accept that the person is American, they think that the American obviously must not be able to speak French very well because they’re American. As such, it can be hard at times to find people to speak French with.
J’ai vécu pendant plus d’une année aux Etats-Unis. Je ne sais pas si c’est un idée préconcue, mais j’ai l’impression que pour les Américains L’Europe ç’est Paris, et peut être Rome, le reste ça n’existe pas. “An American in Paris” and “Roman Holyday” dit a lot of harm!

It is probably a stereotype even to say that “the French” stereotype Americans and vice versa. The US has a population of 300 million. Among them are many fat people and many who exercise fanatically, both groups are probably much larger than their equivalents in France. I also live in Houston, and everyone I know uses butter, drinks wine and knows more about both cooking and wine than most of the French I have met (I have travelled every year to France for the last 15 years and speak French). Parisian waiters are rude? The two best waiters I have ever seen anywhere were at the Cafe de Flor, polite, correct, and effecient to French, Americans, Brits, Norwegians, etc.

Tony Young – I wouldn’t say there is a “real” English voice. Obviously, most English speakers have either a British accent, or an American accent. Confusion in diciphering between speaking English in England, and speaking English in the US is understandable for non-native anglophones. They’re both ways of speaking differentiated primarily by geographic location, so neither voice (English or American) would be the “real” voice, even though British English was the original English.

I think it’s funny that anyone on this site is repeating the stereotype that Americans aren’t interested in other countries. If we weren’t, then why would we be subscribing to a French newsletter? BTW, Laura, thanks for all the great and useful phrases and tips. Keep up the good work!
For my neighbors, French people always smoke, drink wine and eat always a “baguette”. When I went to France, I met french people and it’s wrong ! They drink sometimes wine, and 30% of French smoke. My French friends ate not a “baguette”, but different kind of bread.
I think Tony Young, Lyndsy and Jos are betraying their own stereotypes; Please don’t confuse English with Brits (you will upset the Scots and the Welsh), Richard Burton didn’t have an English voice (it was Welsh) and there are many more countries other than the UK and the USA where English is the main language.
Hi I’m french and It’s true that we have lots of stereotypes on americans but most of them are true unfortunetly. The image we have of them is quitly bad: lots of videos on the net show that they don’t have much culture; On my history book last year in the chapter concerning the american way of life, we had an image of a huge teenager, sitting in front of is t.v. eating a hamburger… So you can’t say that americans aren’t as we see them that’s a fact

Buenas, soy frances y es verdad que tenemos muchos stéréotypos a proposito de los americanos pero muchos de ellos estan verdaderos. La imagina que tenemos de ellos no esta mucho bien: muchas videos en internet nos mustran que los americanos no tienen mucha cultura; el ano pasado, en mi libro de sociales, tenia una imagina de un enorme aolescente que etaba viendo a la television y que estaba comiendo un hamburger… por eso no puedes decir que los americanos no estan como los veemos es eso
Guillaume: A picture in a history book does not prove a stereotype!
Hi at school, we study about stereotype and it is true that French people have a lot of sterotype about the American but they are not true. What said Guilaume is true about the history books but I don’t think all of the American are fat because I’ve got family in America and they are not fat.
Stereotypes are just prejudices about people.
And the American have got also lots of stereotypes about the French people but they haven’t any berets on their head or vienna loaf under thier arm.
