The French can be a bit reserved like us Brits. When I go there (brittany) I visit the Tabacs & often stike up a bit of dialogue with my mediocre french. Sorry this is in english….but I didn’t want an “oh la la”! Thanks for you website. Jeremy

(3) Patricia Ryan says:

Years ago, sauerkraut was on display, and perhaps made, in enormous barrels in our local market. These were big enough for a person to stand in, so, I suppose one could at least walk round in circles in one of them !
Love your website.

Quite right, early sauerkraut manufacture often involved treading in the vats, much in the same manner as grapes were sometimes crushed in the production of wine.

(8) Edward says:

Some years ago I had some experience with a sauerkraut factory in Philadelphia. The image with the vats is very apt, but also in this family-owned business one group of cousins seemed to be working against the other group, making the image even more sadly comical.

“Pedaler” - French press has tons of great stories about cycling, from exhilarating race accounts, to drug scandals, to philosophical and political debates represented in the background of the racers. The country is mad about bikes. And look at the annual spectacle of Le Tour, and the thousands of tourists who flock to see it.

Much more could be done about the language of le velo.
