The expression “peaufiner” is a strange one! What is its derivation, and what is it alluding to? A literal rendering would seem to be “finished skin”? Does this having something to do with the tanning of skins?

I don’t know, unfortunately. All Le Grand Robert says is “se peaufiner, 1865; de peau, et fin.”
