Language skills assessment
Friday March 19, 2004
In the UK, language skills are getting more recognition. A new program will give participants aged 7 to adult an official language ability score.
The UK Department for Education and Skills has commissioned a language assessment program, known as the National Recognition Scheme, from the University of Cambridge. This series of assessment tests will include the four basic skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and result in a ranking such as "breakthrough" or "mastery" for each language.
Pilot testing for French, Spanish, and German will begin in September, with nation-wide testing scheduled to begin in 2005.
